Our databases were compiled using other sources such as Charity Village and Smartfund.

For the 93 selected foundations, we went to the websites, if they had one, and tried to obtain more current data than may have been available on the other lists. These are our best efforts, not guarantees of current and complete accuracy.

Foundations

Foundations in Canada are charities under the Canada Revenue Agency and must be registered  prior to be being able to issue receipts and or to access  tax provisions surrounding charities.  So when you are trying to find organizations that may support your Non Profit Organization (NPO), and you are looking at foundations for that assistance, you have to separate charities from foundations.  In April 2010, there were 114,425 registered charities with the Revenue Canada Agency. Less than 10% of these (10,532) had the word foundation in their title.  Of these 10,532 foundations, approximately 1900 of these had British Columbia addresses. Only 3 of these had Powell river Addresses.

The first thing to know about foundations is that in order to keep their charitable status they have to either give their money to "qualified donnees" or manage the project so that they can prove to Revenue Canada that the money was spent on only activities that support the foundation's charitable charter.  This is why many foundations simply send money to other charities, hospitals or schools (qualified donnees). This does not mean that they can't give money to non-profits, rather it means that non-profits have to set up proper accounting and reporting structures to correspond to the needs of Revenue Canada and the Foundation giving you support.  For more information about this please go to our section on becoming a charity.

In an effort to help, we have built a database of charities that we believe may be relevant to Powell River Non Profit Organizations.  We have identified 93 organizations that either had a British Columbia address or were national in scope, and attempted to identify if they had a policy of  supporting only charities.  The databases are not all inclusive and most have been cobbled together from other websites, notable among them were "CharityVillage", "Smartfund",  "Philanthropic Foundations of Canada" and the "Canadian Book of Charities".  For the Powell River subset, we looked at the organizations' websites and have copied their language with respect to their mission and their funding requirements.

Our Databases

As mentioned above there are over 100,000 registered charities in Canada.  There are free lists and tools that you can use to reduce numbers to a more manageable size (see below).  Originally we to amassed 600-700 foundation and charity names.  We then continued to eliminate organizations that seemed unlikely to fund projects in Powell River, leaving 93 foundations. This is by no means an inclusive list.  It is simply the ones that we found during this project.

Other databases

Other databases that you may wish to access are:Revenue Canada  This link will bring you to the Revenue Canada's listing of all charities in Canada.  Use the advanced search features to narrow your requests.

Charity Village Charity Village is one of the most useful websites we have seen as a start off point for any non-profit.

Smartfund.ca  Smartfund, a product of  Vancouver Coastal Health shows an interesting array of foundation and government funding agencies.

If you want to pay for access to databases that may be more manageable, then we have a little experience with  Imagine Canada and with Big Online Foundations Canada.  Check the Library first though as they may have a paper copy or an electronic version for use at the library.
